Key word: Silent Film, Writing Narrative Text Writing is one of skills of communication in English which can help us to express our idea, feeling, and opinion in written language. One of the writing competences in second semester of the tenth grade in SMA Islam Sultan Agung 2 Kalinyamatan that should be learned by the students are to text in form of narrative, descriptive and news item. Narrative text is one of the monologue text that should be learnt by the students. In writing narrative text, students should be able to choose vocabulary that used in making a text and write focus on grammatical structure. In teaching narrative text, the teacher able to use media of teaching, the fact shows thatthe teacher seldom uses media in teaching English especially writing, therefore the students find some difficulties in using vocabulary when they write a text and need much time to write a text. To solve the problem, the teacher finds out how to make the students able to use vocabulary and explore their idea in written text. The teacher should try to use the effective media which suitable with the material for increasing the students’ creativity in using their vocabulary to produce a text and exploring the idea, therefore the students able to writing a text. Silent film is one of media for teaching and learning which shows the animated film that has no dialogue speech in the film, therefore the students able to use their vocabulary and explore their imagination to create a story text. Therefore, the statement of problem in this research is can silent film improve the writing ability in narrative text of the tenth grade students of SMA Islam Sultan Agung 2 KalinyamatanJepara in academic year 2013/2014. The purpose of this research is to know whether silent film can improve the writing ability in narrative text of the tenth grade students of SMA Islam Sultan Agung 2 KalinyamatanJepara in academic year 2013/2014. This research is classroom action research which the subject of this research is the tenth grade students of SMA Islam Sultan Agung 2 KalinyamatanJepara in academic year 2013/2014 which consists of 149 students and for the sample of this research is X.1 class. The instrument of this research is observation sheet to know the effectiveness of silent film as the media in teaching writing narrative text and achievement test to know the improvement of the students’ writing ability.

The result of the writing test in this research shows that the using of silent film can improve the writing ability in narrative text of the tenth grade students in SMA Islam Sultan Agung 2 Kalinyamatan in academic year 2013/2014 by seeing the mean scores of the students’ test in cycle 1. The mean scores of the writing test in cycle 1 were 64.87 which followed by 30 students with the maximum score is 100, so the percentage were 64.87%, based on the passing grade is 74, so the conclusion for cycle 1 was not successful yet. Therefore, the writer continued to cycle II. In the writing test of cycle II, the students’ achievement reached 80.13% with the average score were 80.13, it is upper than the passing grade. There are many students that able to pass the writing test. It means that the writing test was successful. Therefore, the writer concludes that silent film can improve the students’ writing ability. Considering the results of this research, the writer concludes that silent film can improve the writing ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Islam SultangAgung 2 KalinyamatanJepara in academic year 2013/2014. Based on the process of teaching writing using silent film, the teachers are advised to use Silent film in teaching writing, because it is proven that this media can improve the students’ achievement in writing narrative text. The media also can help the students to be more active in the class in writing activity. In addition, the teacher should pay attention which one the media that suitable with the material and the teacher have to considering on students’ interest and the objective of teaching. This research will give some useful information about teaching writing by using silent film. It becomes more interesting for the students to produce the text by visualization of silent film.

Salah satu kompetensi menulis di semester 2 dari kelas sepuluh di SMA Islam Sultan Agung 2 Kalinyamatan Jepara dalam tahun ajaran 2013/2014 yang harus dipelajari oleh siswa adalah untuk membuat teks monolog berbentuk narrative, descriptive, dan News Item. Narrative merupakan salah satu teks monolog yang harus di pelajari oleh siswa. Dalam menulis teks narrative siswa harus bisa memilih kosakata yang tepat dan menulis dengan struktur penulisan yang benar. Faktanya siswa masih kesulitan menulis dalam bahasa inggris yang benar karena mereka mempunyai sedikit kosakata bahasa inggris sehingga mereka kesulitan menulis dalam bahasa inggris. Dalam pembelajaran menulis narrative teks guru dapat menggunakan media pembelajaran, faktanya memperlihatkan bahwa guru jarang menggunakan media didalam mengajar menulis, sehingga siswa menemukan beberapa kesulitan dan membutuhkan waktu banyak untuk menulis teks. Untuk memecahkan masalah itu, guru mencari cara untuk membuat siswa dapat memberikan ide untuk menulis teks. Guru harus mencoba untuk menggunakan media yang efektif yang sesuai dengan materi pembelajaran untuk meningkatkan kreatifitas siswa dalam mengeksplore ide sehingga siswa dapat menulis sebuah teks. Silent Film merupakan salah satu media pembelajaran yang menunjukkan film animasi yang tidak terdapat percakapan dialog dalam film tersebut, siswa dapat mengeksplor imajinasi mereka untuk membuat sebuah teks cerita. Sehingga rumusan masalah dari penilitian ini adalah dapatkah media silent film meningkatkan kemampuan menulis teks narrative dari kelas sepuluh di SMA Islam Sultan Agung 2 Kalinyamatan Jepara Tahun Ajaran 2013/2014. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah ingin mengetahui apakah media silent film dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis teks narrative dari kelas sepuluh di SMA Islam Sultan Agung 2 Kalinyamatan Jepara Tahun Ajaran 2013/2014.

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas yang dimana subjek penelitiannya adalah siswa kelas sepuluh di di SMA Islam Sultan Agung 2 Kalinyamatan Jepara pada tahun ajaran 2013/2014 yang terdiri dari 149 siswa dan sample pada penilitian ini adalah kelas X.1. Alat yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah obervasi untuk mengetahui efektifitas media silent film dalam pembelajaran menulis teks narrative dan tes untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa. Hasil tes menulis dari penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa penggunaan silent film dalam mengajar kemampuan menulis teks narrative dari kelas sepuluh di SMA Islam Sultan Agung 2 Kalinyamatan Jepara Tahun Ajaran 2013/2014 dengan melihat nilai rata-rata siswa pada tes siklus 1 adalah 64,87 yang diikuti oleh 30 siswa dengan ketentuan nilai maksimal 100 sehingga prosentasenya adalah 64,87%, berdasarkan nilai KKM adalah 74 jadi kesimpulan untuk siklus 1 dinyatakan belum sukses. Sehingga penulis melanjutkan ke siklus II. Dalam tes menulis di siklus II, nilai siswa mencapai prosentase 80,13% dengan nilai ratarata 80,13, nilai tersebut menunjukkan lebih tinggi dari nilai KKM. Banyak siswa yang dapat melewati tes menulis tersebut, itu artinya tes menulis siklus II dinyatakan telah sukses. Sehingga penulis menyimpulkan bahwa silent film dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa. Mempertimbangkan dari hasil penelitian, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa silent film dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa kelas sepuluh di SMA Islam Sultan Agung 2 Kalinyamatan Jepara tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Berdasarkan proses pengajaran kemampuan menulis menggunakan silent film, guru disarankan untuk menggunakan silent film dalam mengajar menulis, karena telah dibuktikan bahwa media pengajaran ini dapat meningkatkan nilai siswa dlam menulis teks narrative. Media ini juga dapat membantu siswa lebih aktif di kelas ketika mengikuti pelajaran menulis. Sebagai tambahan, guru harus memperhatikan media mana yang sesuai dengan materi pembelajaran dan guru juga harus memperhatikan ketertarikan siswa serta tujuan pemebelajaran. Penilitian ini akan memberikan beberapa informasi yang berguna tentang pengajaran menulis dengan menggunakan silent film. Hal tersebut menjadi lebih menarik untuk siswa dalam membuat teks dengan penggambaran dari film tersebut.
